Places of interest

Kota Bharu
Two places worth visiting in the state capital are the Cultural Centre, which has traditional arts of Kelantan, including kiteflying, rebana (giant drums), silat (martial arts) and wayang kulit (shadow play).

Also worth a look is the Kelantan Central Market, one of the most vibrant in the country. The sights and sounds are unique to Kelantan. The market is probably the most photographed site in the country. Best time to see it is mid-morning.

Masjid Kampung Laut
One of the oldest mosques in Malaysia. The mosque was rebuilt piece by piece from its original site at Kampung Laut because floods from the nearby river.

Gunung Stong
At nearly 1,500m, this is Kelantan's highest point. Legend has it that a pot of gold believed to have been hidden during WWII is buried somewhere in one of the caves!

Museum of Royal Traditions
Formerly the Royal Palace, the museum is a beautiful old building housing photographs, artifacts and exhibits from Kelantan's cultural history.

Wat Photivihan Jambu
The shrine of the largest reclining Buddha in South-East Asia is situated in the village of Kg Jambu, 12 km north of Kota Bharu.
