This duty-free island has only recently
become travellers stop and as yet has not fallen victim to the tourist
developers. Labuan is mainly used as the connecting point to get to Brunei
but is worth looking around for a few days.
Many of Labuan’s places of interest are
of historical significance, the island being an important location during
World War II.

Places of interest
Labuan Square
Four old Flame of the Forest trees stand in a square area, casting a shade
over park benches and commemorative stones. They were planted by the Chinese,
Malay, Indian and European communities in Labuan in the 1950's to mark
the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
The various stone plaques record historic events in Labuan.
Labuan WWII Memorial
Nearly 4,000 graves of soldiers who died in battle or captivity can be
seen here. Most of the soldiers were Australians and British with a few
New Zealanders, Indians and Malaysians.
In February 1945, the Japanese Imperial
Army forced the POW's to march on what is now known as the "Renau
Death March". Hundreds died along the way and those who were left
behind in Sandakan POW camp also died or were murdered.
The graves are well maintained in long neat
rows, all bearing a plaque, "Known unto God". The memorial is
maintained by Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Peace Park
Close to Surrender Point, where the Japanese Army surrendered to the Australiansc
in September 1945. The Japanese took formal possession of Labuan in 1942
and occupied the island for 3 years.
The allies finally defeated the japanese
through weight of numbers as the island was seen as an important base
from which to recapture Singapore. A bronze plaque commemorating these
events is mounted on a stone slab near the entrance.
The Chimney
The last remaining structure from the old coal mining days. Labuan was
once a flourishing settlement centred around the town of Victoria. When
the industry died out at the start of the 20th century most of the townspeople
left.
The Old Chimney is over 100ft. tall and
stands at the entrance to the old mining tunnels. A short distance away,
one can also visit two sites where there are remnants of the mining tunnels.
Just 25m. from The Chimney is a spectacular cliff drop onto the rocks
and sea below.
Gurdwara Sahib (Sikh Temple)
This Sikh temple, built in 1957, was inspired by the "Golden Temple’ in
Amritsar. It offers free accomodation in the temple hostel for those who
are down on their luck. Smoking at the temple premise is strictly prohibited.
