a Sumatran prince in 14th century, was a major trading port for Indian
and Chinese trading shipsand has been ruled by the Portuguese, Dutch and
the British. Independence came in 1957 with the rest of Malaysia taking
over from the British.

Places of interest
The Sultanate Palace
This is a replica of the original structure, at the foot of St. Paul's
Hill. The design is based on the description in the 16th century "Malay
Annals" and is the only building of its kind in Malaysia, providing
a rare glimpse of the ancient Malay Kingdom.

St. Francis Xavier's Church
St. Francis Xavier is well known for his missionary work, spreading the
Catholic word around South East Asia during the 16th century.
Melaka Cultural Museum
Houses numerous artifacts of the old Kingdom.
St. Paul's Church
On top of the hill, used as burial ground for the Dutch nobility. The
tombstones have Latin and Portuguese inscriptions and St. Francis Xavier
was buried here before his body was moved to Goa in India.

Famosa Fortress
Built as a defensive structure by the Portuguese after they captured Melaka.
The Dutch invasion destryed virtually the whole structure and all that
remains today is just the entrance walls.
The Stadthuys
The official residence of the Dutch Governor during their ruling period.
Now houses the Historic Museum.
Bukit China
Believed to be the largest Chinese cemetery outside China, dating back
to the Ming Dynasty.
The Kampung Keling Mosque
One of the oldest mosques in Malaysia. An impressive combination of Sumatran
and Western architecture with a 3 tier pyramid roof and columns supporting
the carved wood ceiling.
Cheng Hoon Teng Temple
The oldest Chinese temple in the country. The temple is decorated with
mythological figures made from broken glass and porcelain wood carvings
which are quite awesome.

Jonker's Street

Beaches
There are three popular beaches in Melaka, Klebang, Tanjung Kling, and
Tanjung Bidara. All three are lined with palm trees and are clean and
well maintained. Perfect places to soak up a few rays.
Tanjung Keling is the nearest beach to the town centre. There are
several "Grill Fish" stalls along the beach which offer fresh sea food
for the visitors.
Tanjung Bidara is ideal for swimming, water-skiing, and canoeing.
Chalets and motels are available and there are many picnic spots.
Pantai Kundur is a small fishing village, popular for swimming
and night fishing.
Pulau Besar (Besar Island)
This off-shore paradise makes an ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle
in the city. Pulau Besar is surrounded by sacred graves and shrines and
has a real tranquil ambience.
