the sandstone rocks of the Crocker Range.
Over time wind and rain eroded away the
softer rocks before the Ice-Age carved the jagged granite peaks. Mt. Kinabalu
is still growing, at approx. 5mm per year.
State Mosque

Sandakan
Formerly the capital of British North Borneo, Sandakan was an important
trading post for Europeans, Arabs, Chinese and Indians. Sandakan was once
known as little Hong Kong as the strong Chinese influence is still evident,
from the earliest settlers who made their way down from the southern Chinese
provinces.
Places of interest in Sandakan include the
Puu Gih Jih Chinese Temple, St Michael and All Angels Cathedral.
Turtle Islands Park
Incorporating the three islands of Selingan, Bakkungan Kecil and Gulisan

the islands.
The islands were granted National Park status
in 1977, mainly to protect the turtles. For details on how to get to the
park contact any tour operator in Sandakan Town.
Sepilik Orangutan Centre

are also nature trails where you might just meet an orangutan grinning
at you!
